The Wall Street Journal: Rep. Matt Gaetz has been a divisive figure within the House GOP, creating turmoil by successfully ousting former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Gaetz initiated the motion to vacate the speaker’s seat, teaming up with seven other Republicans and 208 Democrats. Despite the vacancy, the House has been unable to elect a new speaker, with Gaetz’s mentor, Rep. Jim Jordan, failing to secure majority support. Many Republicans hold Gaetz responsible for the current chaos and division within the party, labeling him as a disruptive force. Gaetz defends his actions to achieve better outcomes, criticizing McCarthy for failing to fulfill promises on handling spending bills.

Gaetz’s actions were not part of the faction’s broader program but appear to have been the result of his personal agenda. His actions have garnered him much attention and support from conservatives, but critics call him a “charlatan” and accuse him of sowing discord for personal gain, but Gaetz argues he is driven by outcomes and not headlines. Gaetz argues that upheaval is necessary for systemic change and says he fears American decline more than chaos.

Regardless of the outcome of the current speaker race, Gaetz is seen as a winner by some observers. If a conservative is elected as speaker, Gaetz would be viewed as a hero on the right; otherwise, it would lend credence to his claims that the political establishment is thwarting conservative objectives.
