Der Spiegel: Amid a major security crisis, Israel is preparing for decisive military action. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett have railed against Hamas in the wake of the attack, which allowed some 1,500 Hamas militants to infiltrate the country and kill hundreds of people. Bennett notably defends Israeli airstrikes against Hamas positions, drawing a historical parallel: “When Britain fought the Nazis in World War II, no one asked what was happening in Dresden.” This view reflects a shared commitment to maximum deterrence of adversaries, regardless of international opinion.

Senior Israeli military and intelligence officials have publicly acknowledged these lapses. Netanyahu and his defense minister have yet to comment on their culpability but have vowed to restore Israeli deterrence by decisively defeating Hamas. Parallels are also being drawn with Israeli actions in past conflicts, such as the 1973 Yom Kippur War, underscoring the national sentiment in favor of a strong military solution. International leaders, including EU and U.S. representatives, have visited Israel, and U.S. President Joe Biden has warned Israel against repeating the mistakes the U.S. made after 9/11. Despite this, Israel seems intent on using maximum force against Hamas, saying the choice for the latter is either unconditional surrender or death.
