Politico: The European Union’s (EU) influence and relevance on the global stage is declining, as observed in recent geopolitical events. Despite being a significant economic market, the EU’s global influence is diminishing due to the decline of its economy and its limited military prowess amidst increasing global unrest. This decline is evident in the EU’s inconsistent responses to the Hamas-Israel conflict, where contradicting statements about aid to the Palestinian Authority were made within 24 hours. Furthermore, the EU’s stance on the crisis in Israel was muddled, with varying opinions and actions from different EU representatives. Meanwhile, the U.S. showcased a clear, supportive stance for Israel. Europe’s limited geopolitical influence was also visible in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, where despite efforts from the European Council President, Azerbaijan took control of the region. In Kosovo, European endeavors for peace between Albanian and Serbian populations have seen little progress. The EU’s dependence on the U.S. for crisis resolution was again evident in the tensions in Kosovo.
Europe’s aspiration versus its actual capabilities in geostrategic matters is highlighted in the context of Ukraine, where the EU’s support falls short compared to the U.S. in helping Ukraine against Russian advances. The article underscores that while Europe talks about strengthening its defense capabilities, real actions are scarce. The disconnect between the EU’s aspirations and actions was evident when the U.S. decided to send an aircraft carrier in response to the Hamas attack, leading to unserious discussions in Europe about having its own aircraft carrier.
In a very symbolic gesture by European leaders as major world crises unfold, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz celebrated their successful discussion at a local marina with beer and Fischbrötchen, Hamburg’s fish sandwich, after a meeting in Hamburg.
