Der Spiegel: Israel is waging one of the most destructive offensives in history, experts say. More destruction than Aleppo, Mariupol or the German bombings during World War II. No historical military operation has been as devastating as the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, according to the analysis. In just more than two months, the Israeli offensive caused more destruction than the attacks on Syria’s Aleppo between 2012 and 2016, the siege of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol or, conventionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II.
According to another investigation, more civilians were killed than in the three-year campaign waged by the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State group. The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip is now estimated at nearly 20,000, and the international community has called for a cease-fire. The Israeli offensive has destroyed more than two-thirds of all buildings in the northern Gaza Strip and a quarter of buildings in the southern Khan Younis neighborhood. This includes tens of thousands of homes as well as schools, hospitals, mosques and stores. According to UN observers, about 70 percent of school buildings in the Gaza Strip have been damaged. At least 56 damaged schools served as temporary shelters for displaced civilians. Observers said 110 mosques and three churches were damaged by Israeli attacks.
“Gaza represents one of the most intense campaigns of civilian annihilation in history,” according to U.S. military historian Robert Pape.
U.S. President Joe Biden’s government continues to supply arms to Israel in the background. However, last week Biden publicly acknowledged that Israel is losing international legitimacy because of its “indiscriminate bombing.”
