The Times: The Gaza region is witnessing extreme devastation with many families displaced from homes that are now just rubble. 200,000 people have been uprooted as essential supplies such as fuel, food, and medicine are scarce. Ali Jadallah’s home was destroyed, burying some of his family members underneath. Israeli fighter jets have decimated regions like Sheikh Radwan in Gaza City, in retaliation to Hamas’s activities and the loss of over 1,200 Israeli lives. Beit Hanoun, a once-populated area of Gaza, is now deserted. While Israel had forewarned the residents of the upcoming bombardments, the scale of destruction left them shocked and homeless.

The United Nations reported that 175,000 displaced individuals are sheltered in its schools in Gaza, taking the total number of displaced to over 200,000. Tragically, 11 UN workers, including teachers and a counselor, lost their lives, mainly in their residences. They were employees of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which offers education and healthcare in Palestinian refugee camps. In the light of these casualties, UNRWA’s deputy director, Jenifer Austin, urged for an end to the conflict.

The continuous airstrikes since Saturday reflect the severe impact on Gaza’s essential services, catering to its two million residents. Gaza’s lone power station ceased operations on Wednesday due to a fuel shortage. Israel has halted its electricity and water supply to Gaza, also preventing the entry of food and other aid. The situation in hospitals is dire, with a death toll surpassing 1,100 and over 5,000 injured – 60% of whom are women and children. Gaza’s healthcare is strained with reports of operating rooms being overwhelmed and shortages of crucial medical supplies.

Additionally, airstrikes have targeted telecommunications facilities, severely disrupting mobile and internet services for Gaza residents.
