Stéphane Séjourné, an MEP and secretary-general of Macron’s Renaissance party, is the new foreign minister LUDOVIC MARIN/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

The Times: President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Stéphane Séjourné, the former partner of his new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, as the Foreign Minister in a recent government reshuffle. Séjourné, 38, an MEP and a key figure in Macron’s Renaissance party, replaces Catherine Colonna, a seasoned diplomat who served as the ambassador to London. This move has raised eyebrows due to Séjourné’s lack of government experience and his past relationship with Attal.

Gabriel Attal, 34, openly discusses his sexuality, while Séjourné has been more private. The pair were previously in a civil union, dissolved two years ago. Séjourné’s promotion coincides with Attal’s recent appointment as Prime Minister.

In another surprising move, Macron appointed Rachida Dati, a prominent conservative and former justice minister under President Sarkozy, as the new Culture Minister. Dati, a media-savvy politician with North African heritage, is replacing Rima Abdul Malak. This decision seems to be a nod to the conservative Republicans party and Sarkozy, who remains an influential figure in Macron’s circle despite his legal troubles.

The reshuffle also retained key ministers Bruno Le Maire (Finance), Sébastien Lecornu (Defence), and Éric Dupond-Moretti (Justice). Dati’s legal issues, including an ongoing investigation into potential corruption related to a payment from Renault, have been highlighted by the left-wing opposition.
