Sky News: President Vladimir Putin has reiterated during a four-hour television interview that Russia’s goals in the Ukraine conflict remain unchanged and peace will only be achieved when those goals are met. The annual event resumed after a year-long hiatus due to the conflict in Ukraine, during which various topics, including such mundane issues as the price of eggs, were touched upon.
▪️ Putin reiterated that Russia seeks “de-nazification, de-militarization and neutral status” for Ukraine, which is necessary to prevent it from joining NATO. He said there are 617,000 troops in Ukraine, including 244,000 reservists, and daily recruitment is not decreasing. President Putin’s determination to carry on – despite heavy losses to his forces and tough international sanctions – came after he confirmed he was going for re-election again in March.
▪️ It also came the week Ukraine’s President Zelensky went on a mission to America, pleading with his allies for billions more dollars in military support and aid. There’s no certainty he’ll get it, because Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are linking continued military aid to Ukraine with domestic concessions on immigration – something Democrats have so far found distasteful.
▪️ Meanwhile, Hungarian President Viktor Orban is also blocking the European Union from providing 50 billion euros in financial aid to Kiev to support it in continuing to fight Putin’s troops.
Despite the question-checking, several other embarrassing messages popped up on the screens from time to time. Among them: “Don’t run for another term – let the young try”; “When will the lives of ordinary people become better not in words but in deeds?”; and “A bad peace is better than a good quarrel. We must move in this direction. People’s lives are an unacceptable price.”
