The New York Times: The House of Representatives voted to formally open an impeachment inquiry into President Biden, a move initiated by Republicans despite lacking evidence of high crimes or misdemeanors. This decision follows a yearlong investigation by Republicans into Biden and his family, which has not produced substantial proof of wrongdoing. The vote, split along party lines, reflects a shift in the political landscape, with Republicans unanimously supporting the inquiry.

▪️ Democrats, however, view this as a political stunt, accusing Republicans of weaponizing impeachment for political gains. President Biden criticized the Republicans for focusing on attacks rather than addressing pressing national issues.
The inquiry’s focus includes Hunter Biden’s business dealings and their potential connection to President Biden. Hunter Biden, under indictment on federal tax and gun charges, defied a subpoena for a private deposition, offering to testify publicly but refusing closed-door interviews over concerns of distorted leaks.

▪️ Republicans, led by Representatives James Comer and Jim Jordan, are examining various aspects of President Biden’s family and administration, looking for evidence of corruption. They have gathered extensive documents and testimonies but have yet to prove any direct financial benefit to President Biden from his son’s dealings.

The impeachment inquiry resolution does not specifically accuse President Biden of wrongdoing. It authorizes ongoing investigations, subpoena power, and the hiring of outside counsel. Republicans are particularly interested in the financial transactions involving Hunter Biden and James Biden, President Biden’s brother, and any misleading statements or interactions President Biden had regarding his son’s business partnerships. Despite extensive investigations, Republicans have not succeeded in demonstrating that President Biden profited from his son’s business activities.
