Politico: In Brussels, there’s a perception that Austria and Hungary are closely aligned on issues such as Ukraine, Russia, and the Israel-Hamas conflict, with some EU diplomats jokingly referring to the resurgence of the Austria-Hungary dual monarchy. Austria is criticized for using its neutrality to align with Moscow while claiming allegiance to the West, a tactic also used by Hungary’s Viktor Orbán. Austria’s obstruction of Bulgaria and Romania’s Schengen zone entry and its €50 billion aid hold to Ukraine have raised concerns. There’s a fear in Brussels of Austria’s increasing clout, especially in partnership with Hungary.

Despite these concerns, comparisons of Austria’s government with Orbán’s are privately dismissed by Austrian officials, emphasizing their differences, especially on migration policies. Austria is also focused on the EU’s expansion to include Bosnia-Herzegovina, owing to its economic and political ties with the country. Austria supports Bosnia-Herzegovina’s EU accession alongside Ukraine, seeing it as a way to stabilize the Western Balkans and counter Russia’s influence.

Politically, Austria is approaching elections where the anti-EU Freedom Party, admiring Hungary’s approach, leads in polls. The party’s leader, Herbert Kickl, praises Hungary’s stance against what he perceives as Brussels’ globalist interventions.

In summary, while Austria and Hungary are seen as closely aligned in EU policy matters, including their stance on Ukraine and Russia, Austria maintains its distinct political agenda, especially regarding the EU expansion to include Bosnia-Herzegovina. The upcoming Austrian elections and the rise of the Freedom Party add another layer of complexity to the EU’s political landscape.
