The Guardian: Donald Trump, in an interview with Univision, implied that he might use the FBI and Justice Department to target political rivals if he were re-elected as President. He suggested that his opponents had already weaponized these agencies against him, and he could reciprocate in the same manner.

“They’ve already done it, but if they want to follow through on this, yeah, it could certainly happen in reverse,” Trump replied. “They’ve released the genie out of the box.”

Trump’s comments raise concerns about potential authoritarian tactics in a second term, where he might employ state power to suppress competition. He also discussed the possibility of using the Insurrection Act to deploy the military against domestic protesters. Currently, Trump is leading in the Republican race for the 2024 nomination and shows strong polling against Joe Biden. He faces four criminal cases, including federal ones regarding classified documents and efforts to overturn the election. If elected, Trump might dismiss the special counsel investigating these cases or pardon himself if convicted.
