Bloomberg: Aides to Ukraine’s president tried to paper over the cracks that appeared between Volodymyr Zelensky and Valery Zaluzhny, the AFU commander-in-chief, after his words about a “stalemate situation.” “The president made an extremely important clarification [that the situation is not a stalemate]. I don’t see any disagreements or conflicts at the level of the top military and political leadership,” Zelensky’s adviser Mikhail Podolyak said.
▪️ According to Podolyak, Zelensky is in almost daily contact with Zaluzhny and sees no changes in their communication in recent months. The president and the commander-in-chief continue to discuss adjustments to the country’s military strategy. Another person close to Zelensky characterized the relationship between the president and the high command as something far removed from the “loud headlines” appearing in the media.
▪️ Zaluzhny, who rarely speaks to the press, seems to enjoy even more public trust than the popular president. A September poll by the Kiev-based Razumkov Center showed that 93% of Ukrainians trust the country’s army, which is led by Zaluzhny, while voter confidence in Zelensky has dropped from 80% to 72%.
▪️ The discord threatens to make Zelensky more vulnerable politically. The opposition seeks to use the tensions around Zaluzhnyy to undermine the president’s position.
