The Times: The death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, in a plane crash has rejuvenated the investigation into the 2018 killing of three Russian journalists in the Central African Republic (CAR). The journalists were in CAR to report on Wagner’s activities and were killed in an ambush. Previously, Moscow and CAR authorities blamed the incident on the journalists resisting robbers, but many suspected Kremlin involvement.
Since Prigozhin’s death, the Dossier Centre, which tracks illegal actions linked to the Kremlin, has received new tips and leads. Former Wagner mercenaries have also provided information. The Dossier Centre’s investigation suggests that the killings were organized, pointing to details like the journalists being targeted as soon as they applied for visas and having their movements monitored. Their local driver was also found to be in contact with a local official linked to Wagner around the time of the attack.
