The Washington Post: The Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are in a mess. And the whole country is suffering from it. Democrats should help their political rivals fix the chaos. The best way to do that is if Democrats don’t just watch Republicans fail. That would require at least an unspoken understanding between the two parties, which neither party seems to be seeking. That has to change.

▪️ One option is to empower acting House leader Patrick T. McHenry to run the House while Republicans search for a permanent replacement. Another option is for Republicans to nominate another candidate who would pass a reaffirmed desire to keep the government running and respect the results of the 2020 elections. But Democrats have consistently backed their front-runner, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries for speaker.

▪️ There are other options. Any of these would help Democrats and, more importantly, the country. Democrats will sideline far-right members of the Republican Party who had too much influence during former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s short tenure.

▪️ But the facts remain the facts. Had just a few Democrats not voted “yes” on the motion to oust McCarthy, the House would have continued to work for the past three weeks. And McCarthy would have felt freer not to fear that far-right Republicans would have ousted him for his stance on keeping the government running. And that’s when the national interest would have prevailed. It has to happen at some point.
