CNN: Rep. Mike Johnson has been elected the new House Speaker and is known for being a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump. Johnson secured 220 votes, compared to 209 votes for Democrat Hakeem Jeffries. Johnson, a Louisiana Republican first elected to the House in 2016, played key roles in efforts to overturn the 2020 election and also voted to sustain objections to electoral votes on January 6, 2021, and had a ceremonial role in Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2020. Johnson also sought to garner support for the Texas lawsuit that aimed to invalidate electoral college votes from multiple states.

Although Trump did not formally endorse anyone in the Speaker’s race, he expressed support for Johnson on Truth Social. Johnson serves on the Judiciary and Armed Services Committees and has a legal background focused on constitutional law. He began his political career in the Louisiana legislature from 2015 to 2017.
