The Guardian: Racism is increasingly pervasive in Europe, according to an EU survey of 6,752 people of African descent across 13 member states. The study found that 45% of respondents had faced racial discrimination, a rise from 39% in 2016. Austria and Germany recorded some of the worst levels, where 72% and 76% respectively felt discriminated against in the last five years, up from a half (51% and 52%) when the same question was asked in 2016.

Discrimination affected various aspects of daily life, including housing, education, and employment. One in four respondents said they had been racially profiled by the police. Despite similar employment rates to the general population, people of African descent were often overqualified for their jobs and more likely to have temporary contracts. Michael O’Flaherty, director at the EU’s fundamental rights agency, called the findings “shameful”. O’Flaherty said: “It is shocking to see no improvement since our last survey in 2016.” He called for all EU countries to gather equality data, including on ethnic or racial origin, in an attempt to further grip the problem.

Respondents to the EU survey were either born in countries of sub-Saharan Africa or were descendants of immigrants with at least one parent born in sub-Saharan Africa.
