The Washington Post: French President Emmanuel Macron, during a visit to Israel, suggested that the international coalition currently combating ISIS could also take on Hamas. Speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Macron indicated that France is prepared to join such an effort. Netanyahu equated Hamas to “the new Nazis” and invoked comparisons to Anne Frank to describe the plight of Jewish children targeted by Hamas. However, Macron was vague on what “fight” against Hamas would entail.

The suggestion drew concern from American and European officials who fear that including Hamas could spark a wider regional conflict involving Iran. Macron also urged Hezbollah and Iran not to escalate the situation along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon.

Macron emphasized the need for a political solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict for stability in the Middle East. He also mentioned the French nationals among the hostages held by Hamas, reiterating France’s shared challenge with Israel in this regard.

Meanwhile, Israel has intensified airstrikes in Gaza, hitting 400 targets in 24 hours, with one strike reportedly causing numerous casualties in a refugee camp. Hospitals in Gaza are struggling with power and fuel shortages, and the overall death toll has risen significantly. The EU is considering calling for a “humanitarian pause,” and leaflets from the Israeli military are offering protection and compensation for information on hostages held by Hamas.
