The Wall Street Journal: Meta Platforms faces internal discord over its content moderation policies in the Palestinian territories, following a surge in hateful comments related to recent violent events involving Hamas and Israel. The company’s automatic filters have struggled with the Palestinian Arabic dialect and lack sufficient Hebrew-language data, resulting in several glitches including mistranslations. Internal teams based in Tel Aviv and Dubai have differing opinions on content moderation in the region, further complicating the issue. In an attempt to curb hateful comments, Meta reduced its threshold for hiding comments deemed likely to be inflammatory, but this move was met with objections from Muslim employees within the company. Despite challenges, Meta has committed to improving its automated systems for Arabic and Hebrew languages.
