The Washington Post: Who is Patrick McHenry, the interim replacement for Kevin McCarthy as House speaker? Patrick T. McHenry is the interim Speaker of the House of Representatives, taking office on October 3, 2023, following the ouster of Representative Kevin McCarthy. Under House rules, McCarthy appointed McHenry as his potential successor.

McHenry is a 10-term congressman representing North Carolina’s 10th District and chairs the House Financial Services Committee. He is known for his trademark bow ties, sense of humor and for having previously served as the chief deputy chairman of the Republican Party. McHenry is also a close associate of McCarthy. As interim speaker, McHenry has limited powers: he can call the House to order, make announcements, respond to parliamentary inquiries, rule on points of order, and appoint another interim speaker. However, he cannot administer the oath of office to an elected member without unanimous consent or special approval of the House, and has other restrictions.

The situation is unprecedented, and it remains to be seen whether McHenry will be able to replace McCarthy on a permanent basis. The acting Speaker of the House’s credentials are unverified, and McHenry has not expressed interest in running for Speaker.
