The Financial Times: American universities are losing millions as donors cut off funding because of their students’ stance on Hamas. Donors such as Mark Rowan and Leslie Wexner are calling on universities to condemn Hamas more strongly. They want universities to take a clear and unequivocal stand against Hamas’s actions. Donors are also concerned about anti-Semitism and are calling for universities to take a tougher stance against it. Some donors are demanding tougher action against students who protest against Israel. They threaten to withdraw job offers to such students or not to hire them upon graduation. The pressure from these donors has created a growing crisis on campuses, with some universities revising their statements to be more outspoken. Social media has increased pressure on universities over sensitive issues such as this one.

Donors have a significant impact on American universities due to the substantial amount of funding they provide. The withdrawal of funding is thus a consequence of donor concerns about universities’ response to the Israeli-Hamas conflict, including their stance on Hamas, anti-Semitism, and student protests.
