BBC: The National Party, led by Chris Luxon, has claimed victory in the New Zealand elections. They secured enough seats to potentially form a coalition government with their right-wing allies, particularly Act. Chris Hipkins, the incumbent Prime Minister from the Labour Party, conceded defeat. Luxon, who became an MP in 2020 and leader of the National Party in 2021, pledged to deliver tax relief, reduce the cost of living, improve healthcare, and address education. The coalition with Act would give them a slim majority, and they might also seek the support of NZ First to secure a more stable governance. This marks a significant shift in New Zealand politics, especially since Labour had secured an outright majority in 2020 under former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Labour’s support dwindled due to issues like the cost of living and long Covid lockdowns. The final results are expected to be declared on November 3.
