CNN: More than 700 Palestinian children have been killed and another 2,450 injured in the Gaza Strip since last Saturday, according to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

“According to the latest reports by local health authorities and media, at least 2,215 Palestinians were reportedly killed, including over 700 children, and more than 8,714 people wounded, including more than 2,450 children,” UNICEF spokeswoman Sara Al Hattab told CNN on Saturday.

The figures were in addition to an earlier UNICEF statement that said “hundreds and hundreds” of children had been affected and that the number was growing by the hour. UNICEF officials emphasized the gravity of the situation, describing children with severe burns, mortar wounds and lost limbs. Hospitals are reportedly overcrowded due to the influx of injured children. UNICEF also called for the immediate and safe return of Israeli children held in Gaza to their families.
