The Washington Post: Ukrainian intelligence officials announced that their “experimental” naval drones have damaged two Russian military vessels—the Buyan missile carrier and the Pavel Derzhavin patrol boat—in recent days. These strikes occurred in the Black Sea Fleet area, which is based in Crimea, a territory occupied by Russia. An official from Ukraine’s State Security Service (SBU) revealed that a new drone called “Sea Baby” was used in these attacks. Although the strikes have demonstrated Ukraine’s capabilities in Kremlin-controlled waters, they haven’t significantly impacted Russia’s overall naval strength.
The attacks are part of Ukraine’s larger retaliation strategy against Russia’s military activities, including deadly missile attacks launched from its sea-based missile carriers. These strikes are reportedly causing “outsize morale shocks” among Russian commanders, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Despite the damage inflicted, the Black Sea Fleet remains operational and has not been defeated as a naval force.
